Television has its national networks. Electronic newspapers, it seems, are about to have theirs. Newspaper executives say the industry has begun an evolution toward a handful of national electronic networks that will offer local "brand name" newspaper services. For instance, one of those networks, America Online, now carries "Chicago Online," the service of The Chicago Tribune.

The writers also saluted Dr. and Mrs. JOHN WEBER, the owners of the Live Oak Plantation, as the outstanding owners, and A.P. Indy as the New York Horse of the Year. The John A. Morris Award for the person who did the most for racing was given to ALLEN GUTTERMAN, vice president for marketing of the New York Racing Association, who devised the Super Saturday racing programs.

Reynolds Trims Output Of Aluminum

The Reynolds Metals Company said today that it would cut primary aluminum production 9 percent by the end of October and slash 350 jobs at plants in Massena, N.Y., and Longview, Wash., to counter a worldwide oversupply and depressed prices. Reynolds, the second-largest American aluminum producer, will reduce its after-tax earnings in the third quarter by $8 million, or 13 cents a share, to pay for the plan, which curtails production by 88,000 metric tons.

PRUDENTIAL TO TRY TO SELL REINSURANCE UNIT IN OFFERING

The Prudential Insurance Company of America said yesterday that it was no longer seeking to sell its reinsurance unit privately and would try instead to sell the company to the public in a stock offering. The announcement ends a five-month search for a buyer willing to pay $1.2 billion for Prudential Reinsurance, the nation's fifth-largest reinsurer, with $797 million in premiums written last year.

GE CAPITAL BUYS SCANDINAVIAN FINANCE COMPANY

The GE Capital Corporation has bought a Scandinavian consumer finance company from the Wasa Group of Sweden for $387.5 million in cash and assumed debt. GE Capital, the huge financial services arm of the General Electric Company, said the purchase price for Finax Group included $125 million in cash and $262.5 million of assumed debt. Finax consists of a consumer finance company in Norway and four companies in Sweden that provide unsecured personal loans and credit cards to some 400,000 customers.

AMMUNITION AND WEAPONS MAKER IN $87.4 MILLION BUYOUT

The Allied Research Corporation said yesterday that it had accepted a buyout offer of $19 a share from the First Allied Corporation, an investment company owned by Malcolm I. Glazer, a Florida financier. It was Mr. Glazer's second offer for Allied Research, a maker of ammunition and weapons systems based in Baltimore. In April, Allied Research turned down an offer of $16.50 a share. Yesterday, shares of Allied Research jumped $3.625, to $16.875, on the American Stock Exchange, where its gain of 27.4 percent was the second best of the day.

Textron Inc., based in Providence, R.I., said yesterday that it had filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission to sell 7.5 million shares of its Paul Revere Corporation insurance unit in an initial public offering. Textron said it would use proceeds from the stock issue to reduce debt.

The weekly news magazine Der Spiegel has reported that Volkswagen A.G., contrary to its official statements, is considering the dismissal of its controversial cost-cutter Jose Ignacio Lopez de Arriortua. In its Monday issue, which was made available ahead of publication, Der Spiegel reports that Klaus Liesen, the chairman of VW's supervisory board, is secretly "already thinking about replacing Lopez."

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc. has reached a settlement with Alan Ladd Jr. that will pay Mr. Ladd, its former chairman and chief executive, at least $5 million. Mr. Ladd's employment contract with the movie studio called for him to receive $5.25 million through 1994. "He received at least that," said a person familiar with the situation.
