John D Ehrlichman on July 8 takes stand in his own defense and denies that he authorized break-in at office of Daniel Ellsberg's former psychiatrist Dr Lewis J Fielding; Judge Gesell directs Sec Kissinger to appear as defense witness; assoc special Watergate prosecutor William Merrill attempts in his questioning to show that Ehrlichman knew of plan for psychological profile of Ellsberg before break-in and that Ehrlichman was aware that in authorizing 'covert operation' to examine Fielding's files he was authorizing unlawful entry into Fielding's office; Ehrlichman is asked about Aug 11, '71, memo in which he approved with his initial 'E' plan for 'covert operation' with caveat that it not be traceable to White House; says he thought he was approving legal, conventional operation (L)
