Progress Reported in Newspaper Drivers' Dispute

Face-to-face talks between representatives of The New York Times, the drivers' union and a delivery wholesaler continued for a second day yesterday as a panel of intermediaries reported further progress in efforts to resolve a bitter 10-day labor dispute. "We are pleased to report that the structure set up by the panel, as the way to an accord, is being followed," said a statement issued by the panel late yesterday, while talks were still going on.

The death knell rang for another big New York City retailer yesterday as Alexander's Inc. closed its 11 stores and filed for bankruptcy protection. The budget department store company, merchant to successive waves of struggling immigrants since 1928, said it would reopen the stores for a close-out sale, then cease operations. The company, which has not turned a profit on its retail operations since 1987, will continue to try to sell or lease its stores, some of which occupy prime real estate locations like the one occupied by the flagship store at 58th Street and Lexington Avenue in Manhattan.

Negotiators Report Progress in Talks On Drivers Dispute

Negotiations between The New York Times, a drivers union and a delivery wholesaler reported "some progress" yesterday, the third day of talks aimed at resolving the bitter 11-day labor dispute, a spokesman for a panel of intermediaries said. "They've broken up into subcommittees," said the spokesman, Frank Mazza, who indicated that the parties expected to continue talking at an undisclosed site through much of last night. "They are making some progress," Mr. Mazza continued, "but unless all pieces fall into place there can be no agreement."

Imperatore. The 66-year-old trucking magnate, who has emerged as a central figure in New York's newspaper delivery dispute, has a way of going from prickly to generous to prickly in the span of a sentence. "I'm a very hard-nosed guy, but I truly like people," Mr. Imperatore said with a winning smile, just before his voice fell into a growl, "or I truly don't like them."

NO BUYER FOR BETHLEHEM STEEL UNIT FOUND

The Bethlehem Steel Corporation said yesterday that no potential buyer had presented an acceptable offer, including the demonstration of adequate financial capability, to acquire the company's entire Bar, Rod and Wire division as a continuing business and upgrade its operations. As a result, Bethlehem Steel, which said it had received inquiries about the unit's components, will expand its marketing efforts to include the sale of individual assets. The company will phase out the division's operations as the sale process continues, and plans to exit the business "as quickly as possible."

BOISE TO SELL 11 PLANTS TO WILLAMETTE

The Boise Cascade Corporation said yesterday that it would sell 11 corrugated container plants to Willamette Industries in a transaction that analysts said could be worth $40 million and $77 million. Willamette signed a letter of intent to purchase the plants, all of which are in the Eastern United States, the two forest products companies said. Terms were not disclosed.

AWARD OF PAN AM'S LATIN AMERICAN ROUTES

The Department of Transportation gave tentative approval to United Airlines' plan to acquire the Latin American routes formerly operated by the Pan American World Airways. The department said yesterday that it had found that United, a subsidiary of the UAL Corporation, would effectively service the routes. United agreed to pay $135 million for the routes. The Government tentatively denied a petition by the AMR Corporation's American Airlines to service some of Pan Am's former routes to Argentina, Brazil and Grand Cayman.

CAMPBELL WINS SUIT OVER CONAGRA PROMOTION

The Campbell Soup Company said yesterday that it had won a lawsuit against Conagra Inc. over promotional claims for Conagra's Healthy Choice soup line. Issues in the suit against Conagra, filed last September in in Federal court in Camden, N.J., were referred to the National Advertising Division of the Council of Better Business Bureaus. A special tribunal of the advertising division found that Conagra could not support claims that its soup was healthier than Campbell's. It also cannot use a national television commercial featuring the skater Dorothy Hamill because it contains inaccurate claims and is misleading to consumers, Campbell said. No monetary damages were involved.

Unilever Posts Mixed Sales

Unilever P.L.C.'s first-quarter sales rose in North America but declined in Europe, the company said today. The company did not provided a breakdown of sales figures by region. The British-Dutch food-processing and household goods company attributed the improved performance in North America in part to higher sales in the food and personal-product sectors.
