Farther Down the Road With Favorite Subjects

These last six months have been busy in Our Towns. Pre-vacation visits with people who've populated this column in recent weeks find a fair number of success stories, a few lives in limbo and one death. Professor Bruccoli was unhappy with his writing, so he discarded nearly 200 pages, which hurts just to relate. Teaneck's movies are still pretty cheap. The Great Neck Library Insurgency lost. And Wonder Woman's Mom remains, well, wonderful. Nora Mitchell, that imperfect teen-ager from Elmont, L.I., extended her successes. For years the 16-year-old scholar athlete conned everyone, scoring 1,515 points in basketball, whiffing too many boy batters, serving thousands of burgers and maintaining an 85 academic average. Now, she's fooled Northeastern University into giving her a basketball scholarship while she studies criminal law. (She still leaves her socks on the bedroom floor, however.)

CASCADE INTERNATIONAL'S STORES TO BE AUCTIONED

Cascade International Inc.'s 29 stores will be put up for sale at auctions in San Francisco and southern Florida between July 16 and July 23. Judge Robert A. Mark of the Federal Bankruptcy Court in Miami approved a sale plan submitted by the court-appointed trustee of the failed Boca Raton, Fla., women's apparel retailer. The trustee, Kenneth Welt, said he expected proceeds of $250,000 to $350,000, which he said would be used to pay creditors, who are owed $16 million.

Lazard Team To Assist Olympia Unit

Lazard Freres & Company, the New York securities firm, has assigned three of its top investment bankers to help the United States unit of Olympia & York Developments Ltd., the bankrupt Canadian development company. Felix G. Rohatyn, Arthur P. Solomon and Gerald Rosenfeld will lead the Lazard investment bankers working for Olympia & York Companies (U.S.A.), Mr. Rosenfeld said. "We'll focus on raising capital," he said, declining to be specific.

AMDURA CORP. MISSES AN INTEREST PAYMENT DEADLINE

The Amdura Corporation failed to make its July 3 deadline for an interest payment on $50 million of 10-year term notes due over the next year. Doug Pimple, a company spokesman, said the company's recent default on loan agreements would not affect company earnings, although he added that the company's recent hiring of the New York investment firm Bear, Stearns & Company for help in its restructuring could have a significant impact on operating expenses resulting in a charge to earnings. He declined to comment on the amount of any charge.

Munsingwear Pensions

The Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation, a Government agency, has become the trustee of the Munsingwear Corporation's three pension plans, covering nearly 4,000 workers and retirees. The defined-benefit pension plans were underfunded by $6 million, with assets of $17 million and liabilities of nearly $23 million. Munsingwear, a Minneapolis-based apparel maker, filed for bankruptcy in July 1991. The company and the pension agency later reached an agreement that provided for the settlement of pension liabilities.

German Group To Sell Bonds

The agency responsible for selling former East German state-owned enterprises to the private sector is expected to sell its first domestic bonds within the next two months, a spokesman for the agency said. "All the preconditions for such an issue have been met now, all technical obstacles removed, but we're not quite ready for the starting shot yet," the spokesman said last week. He said the bonds would probably be issued in August or later.

Zale Requests A New Delay

The Zale Corporation has asked a Federal bankruptcy judge to give it another 60 days to file its own plan to reorganize. Zale, a jewelry retailer, filed an emergency motion with the Federal Bankruptcy Court in Dallas on Friday, saying it would not have a reorganization plan ready by the July 23 deadline.

GE POWER GENERATION, a unit of the General Electric Co., signed two contracts totaling $24 million to upgrade seven G.E. steam turbines and perform other generator work for the Florida Power and Light Co., a unit of FPL Group Inc.
