Despite a long and detailed on-air apology from NBC News, General Motors said yesterday that it had suspended advertising on all NBC News programs indefinitely but would continue buying spots on entertainment and sports programs. G.M.'s announcement came as NBC executives announced an "urgent and intense" review of how and why their news magazine program "Dateline NBC" decided to tamper with a G.M. pickup truck so that it would be certain to catch fire in a filmed collision.

Laying the groundwork for the economic proposals he will offer next week, President Clinton returned last night to the talk-show format he used during the fall campaign and tried to prepare the nation for higher taxes and painful budget cuts. Mr. Clinton sought to use the televised "town meeting" broadcast from Southfield in suburban Detroit to persuade Americans that he was not being diverted by the issues that dominated the first two weeks of his Administration: whether to allow homosexuals in the military and the ill-fated search for an Attorney General. Instead, he emphasized that he was working on almost nothing but the economic plan he will introduce Wednesday.

Post Suitor Has Completed Payment, Lawyer Says

While a judge delayed any decision on whether to freeze the assets of the prospective buyer of The New York Post yesterday, his lawyer said that the buyer, Steven Hoffenberg, had already paid the $6 million necessary to acquire the newspaper. That transfer of funds effectively completes the steps necessary for Mr. Hoffenberg to take over The Post. The deal now requires only the approval of a judge handling the separate personal bankruptcy case of The Post's owner, Peter S. Kalikow.

U.S. Judge Will Hold a Hearing Before a Post Sale Is Completed

A Federal judge said yesterday that he would hold a hearing on whether to freeze the assets of Steven Hoffenberg before Mr. Hoffenberg completed his purchase of The New York Post. The action appears to raise an additional obstacle to the purchase because the hearing could cast doubts on the financial ability of Mr. Hoffenberg to complete the deal.

ENRON BUYING LOUISIANA DIVISION FROM WILLIAMS

The Enron Gas Services Corporation has agreed to buy the Louisiana Resources Company and other natural gas businesses in Louisiana from the Williams Companies for $170 million in cash. The acquirer, a division of the Enron Corporation of Houston, said yesterday that it expected to complete the purchase by March 31. Joseph Williams, chairman of the Williams Companies of Tulsa, Okla., said he considered the Louisiana property, which includes a 540-mile pipeline, a better fit with Enron's operations. Proceeds from the sale will help finance capital expansion, he said.

WESTINGHOUSE CUTS CREDIT UNIT'S WORK FORCE BY A THIRD

The Westinghouse Electric Corporation's plan to shed its financial services business continued yesterday as the company eliminated 125 jobs at the Westinghouse Credit Corporation. The cuts, which had been previously announced, reduced the credit unit's work force by a third, to about 260 employees. The remaining jobs will eventually be eliminated. Westinghouse announced on Jan. 27 that it would liquidate Westinghouse Credit and Westinghouse Financial Services Inc.

The Dial Corporation said yesterday that it had reached an agreement to buy the Renuzit air freshener brand from the Drackett Company, a unit of S. C. Johnson & Son, Racine, Wis. Renuzit, which generated about $115 million in sales last year, is among the largest manufacturers in the $1 billion air freshener industry. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. S. C. Johnson acquired Drackett, whose products include Drano drain opener and Windex window cleaner, from the Bristol-Myers Squibb Company on Dec. 31 for $1.15 billion in cash. At the time, Johnson said it planned to sell several brands, including Renuzit, Endust and Behold furniture polish.
