She is on the phone again. She is drinking strong, strong coffee -- cup No. 3 or 4 of the 10 or so she guzzles between dusk and dawn. "And then," she says, "I start on the decaf." It's another caffeine-fueled night at "World News Now," the late-late ABC News program that has made Ms. Assuras a kind of Linda Ellerbee for the 90's. Ms. Ellerbee developed something close to a cult following on "NBC News Overnight," which went on the air in 1982 and was canceled in 1983 because it was costing $3.5 million a year.

Crime now rivals the economy in the eyes of Americans as the single most important problem facing the country, but they are divided over whether Republicans or Democrats are best able to do something about it, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News Poll. The sharp rise in concern about crime helps assure that it will be a front-line issue in this election year. But there is also a widespread sense that the country is powerless to deal with it, with most Americans saying they do not expect violence to decline significantly in the next few years.

But treacherous seems to be the favorite of drivetime weathercasters. The word suggests betrayal -- on the part of the roads at the very least, if not on the part of the precipitation itself. It makes you wonder. How can anyone who knows about the cycle of the seasons feel betrayed by a snowstorm in January? Big talk makes commuters listen to the radio. But then you get in the car and all it takes is an extra half-hour to get to work, which wouldn't be so bad if you didn't have to listen to the horror stories. A man stepped out his door in the morning and almost slipped. Another commuter was stuck in a traffic jam. A woman is wearing long underwear. And, and . . .?

DRESSER INDUSTRIES COMPLETES ACQUISITION OF BAROID

Dresser Industries has completed its $1 billion acquisition of the Baroid Corporation, solidifying its position as the fourth-largest oil service company in the United States. Baroid, the leading drilling-fluids maker, will operate as a unit of Dresser, which ranks behind Halliburton, Schlumberger and Baker Hughes in the industry. Dresser said the purchase price consisted of about $830 million for Baroid's 92.5 million shares, and $178 million for the company's long-term debt. Each Baroid share will be converted into the right to receive four-tenths of a Dresser common share. Shares of Dresser were unchanged at $22.50, on the New York Stock Exchange yesterday.

CORDIS PLANS TO PURCHASE WEBSTER LABORATORIES

The Cordis Corporation agreed yesterday to buy Webster Laboratories Inc., based in Baldwin, Calif., a provider of heart catheters, in a stock swap. Shareholders of Webster, which is privately held, would receive 1.63 million to 2 million common shares of Cordis, which is based in Miami. The final number would be based on the price of Cordis shares before the acquisition is completed, Cordis said. The transaction would be worth $78 million to $96 million, based on Cordis's closing share price yesterday of $48, down 37.5 cents. Webster provides electrophysiology catheters, devices designed to diagnose and treat abnormal heart rhythms. Cordis's products include catheters used to inject dye into patients. It also sells balloon catheters used to unclog blood vessels.

CONTINENTAL AIRLINES TO CUT DENVER SERVICE AND JOBS

Continental Airlines said yesterday that it would cut service at its Denver hub by 23 percent and expects to trim its work force there by 300 jobs. The carrier said that effective on March 9, it would suspend service to six cities from Denver, and cut its daily flights to 107 from 139. The cuts are intended to help Continental achieve profitability, the company said. The affected employees in Denver will be able to bid for jobs in other cities.

PNC BANK ACQUIRES UNITED FEDERAL BANCORP

The PNC Bank Corporation said yesterday that it had completed the acquisition of United Federal Bancorp Inc. for about $166 million, bridging the gap between its markets in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. United Federal, based in State College, Pa., has assets of about $900 million and 18 branches. United Federal shareholders will receive $32.50 a share in cash. The core of United Bancorp's unit, United Federal Savings Bank, will form a new company for PNC Bank. It will be headed by Charles C. Pearson Jr., a former president and chief executive of United Federal. PNC, based in Pittsburgh, has more than 550 offices in Pennsylvania, Delaware, Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana.

GENERAL DATACOMM SHARES SURGE ON FINNISH CONTRACT

Shares of General Datacomm Industries, based in Middlebury, Conn., rose 34 percent yesterday after the company said its Netcomm subsidiary had been awarded a contract to provide switches to Telecom Finland Ltd. The stock gained $3.125, to $12.125, on the New York Stock Exchange, where it had the best percentage gain of the day. The asynchronous transfer mode switches covered in the contract are said to send complex video images, voice and computer information across fiber optic phone networks.

MAC FRUGAL'S STOCK FALLS ON EARNINGS FORECAST

The stock of Mac Frugal's Bargains Close-Outs Inc. slumped 17 percent yesterday because of worry about the company's earnings outlook. Mac Frugal's stock fell $3.125, to $14.375, on the New York Stock Exchange, where 1.5 million shares changed hands. The retail chain said earnings for the year ending on Jan. 31 would be hurt by the earthquake in Los Angeles, which damaged 30 of its stores. Four of the stores remain closed. The company said the damage from the earthquake would result in a pretax charge of $3 million against this year's earnings to repair buildings and cover inventory losses. The company manages a chain of 237 stores in 12 states, called Pic "N" Save and Mac Frugal's Bargains. The company also operated a chain of seasonal Christmas stores in nine states from August through December.
