NBC's "News Radio" is off to an enticing start. And with good reason. The sitcom's credentials are definitely A-list, at least in television's universe. The producers are Brad Grey and Bernie Brillstein, whose credits include HBO's "Larry Sanders Show." The creator is Paul Simms, formerly a writer for Garry Shandling and David Letterman. And the stars are dripping in contemporary hip. Dave Foley of the comedy troupe Kids in the Hall plays Dave, the baby-faced man from Wisconsin who hits Manhattan to be news director of all-news radio station WNYX. Phil Hartman, formerly of "Saturday Night Live," is bringing his delicious sultan-of-smarm manner to the character of Bill, the oily news announcer. And Andy Dick, who has worked prominently with Ben Stiller and Mr. Letterman (he plays Donnie, the fawning page), is Matthew, the hypersensitive apprentice who's sure he is going to be fired for things like his unfortunate on-air mispronunciation of Buttafuoco.

FRONTIER BUYS AMERICAN SHARECOM IN STOCK DEAL

The Frontier Corporation said yesterday that it had bought American Sharecom Inc. for about $198 million in stock, extending the long-distance telephone network of Frontier to the Midwest and West. Frontier, formerly the Rochester Telephone Corporation, will make Minneapolis the hub of its long-distance sales and operations in the northern Midwest, Frontier officials said. American Sharecom, which is closely held and based in Minneapolis, has annual revenue of $125 million. Frontier, based in Rochester, posted revenue of $985.5 million in 1994. Under the transaction, Frontier will issue 8.7 million shares for American Sharecom.

WORLD COLOR PRESS ACQUIRES NORTHEAST GRAPHICS

World Color Press Inc. said yesterday that it had bought Northeast Graphics Inc. for about $100 million. World Color Press, a commercial printer based in New York, said the acquisition would enhance its existing capabilities and give customers a new operation on the East Coast. Northeast, based in North Haven, Conn., is a closely held commercial printer.

G.M. Confirms Government Inquiry

The General Motors Corporation said today that its primary finance unit had received an inquiry from the Justice Department and the Federal Trade Commission, which are conducting an investigation of possible violations of Federal lending discrimination laws. G.M. said that its General Motors Acceptance Corporation unit had received an informal request for information related to its consumer loan practices from the Justice Department and the Federal Trade Commission.

Alcan Aluminium Ltd., based in Montreal, said yesterday that it would sell its British-based aluminum products and metals distribution businesses. The businesses being sold comprise 12 operations at 35 sites in Britain, 7 in the United States and one in Ireland, with combined annual sales of more than $632 million and some 4,200 employees. The products made by the operations include household foil, aluminum high-pressure gas cylinders, aluminum extrusions and tubes, strong-alloy aluminum plate, aluminum wire and cable, zirconium chemicals and magnesium alloys.

International Briefs; Default by Member Closes Bombay Stock Exchange

The Bombay stock exchange will be closed until tomorrow at the earliest while its officials try to settle the debts of a member who was not able to pay nearly 200 million rupees ($6.35 million) for shares he bought. The exchange was closed yesterday after a Bombay broker, R. S. Jhaveri, defaulted on payments for shares he bought in M. S. Shoes East Ltd. from nearly 300 brokers. Many of the brokers are small operators that depend on a steady cash flow.

Chrysler Is Target Of Federal Inquiry

The Chrysler Corporation and its finance unit have been asked for details about consumer lending practices by the Justice Department, which is also investigating whether the Ford Motor Company broke Federal lending discrimination laws. Chrysler and its Chrysler Financial Corporation "have received an informal request for information from the Justice Department and, as is our practice, we are cooperating fully," Karen Stewart, a Chrysler spokeswoman, said. Ms. Stewart did not have further details about the investigation.

Gates to Consider a Merger for Rubber Unit

The Gates Corporation, a large privately held corporation, said today that it was considering merging its rubber operations with a public company to continue its growth. Gates Rubber, which had 1994 revenue of $1.39 billion, is the world's largest maker of power transmission belts and hose and connectors for automotive and industrial applications. Based in Denver, it has 13,500 employees at 39 plants and 23 distribution and sales facilities in 13 countries around the world.

Income Outlook Lifts UAL $5

The shares of the UAL Corporation jumped $5 each today after the airline raised its profit expectations for the first quarter of 1995 and the full year. In a bulletin to investors today, UAL, the parent company of United Airlines, said lower-than-expected costs and rising fares in certain markets made UAL more optimistic about its outlook.
