As a global conference on the future of the treaty banning the spread of nuclear weapons wound to a close tonight, there was consensus on more than extending the accord indefinitely. Praise for the conference president, Jayantha Dhanapala of Sri Lanka, was even broader and certainly more enthusiastic. A diplomat mostly unknown outside the arms control world until he was elected to preside over this conference, Mr. Dhanapala, who is Sri Lanka's Ambassador to the United States, is now being mentioned as a possible Secretary General of the United Nations.

Golf Reporter And CBS Deny Remarks On Lesbianism

Ben Wright, the CBS golf reporter, and the network went on an aggressive attack yesterday against the newspaper that attributed to Wright remarks about the impact of lesbianism on the women's golf tour. After nearly five hours of meetings and time spent polishing their statements, CBS staunchly backed Wright's complete denial of the comments reported in The News Journal of Wilmington, Del. CBS then reinstated him to cover today's and tomorrow's rounds of the McDonald's L.P.G.A. Championship at the DuPont Country Club in Wilmington.

ACQUISITION OF CONTEL CELLULAR IS COMPLETED

The GTE Corporation said yesterday that it had completed the acquisition of 10 million class A shares of Contel Cellular Inc., or the remaining 10 percent of its capital stock, for $255 million in cash. GTE, based in Stamford, Conn., a cellular and local telephone company, now owns all of Contel Cellular's stock outstanding. The company acquired 90 percent of Contel in 1991 as part of its $6.6 billion acquisition of the Contel Corporation. The Atlanta-based Contel Cellular provides cellular service in 32 markets.

SALE OF WATER-TREATMENT CONCERN HINTED

W. R. Grace & Company's new chief executive has indicated he plans to put the company's water-treatment unit up for sale in several months, company shareholders said yesterday. Analysts estimated that Grace Dearborn, based in Lake Zurich, Ill., which had $363.4 million in sales last year, could be sold for as much as $500 million. Mary Lou Kromer, a spokeswoman for the company, said Grace had no plans to divest itself of Dearborn, which provides water-treatment services for industrial boilers, cooling towers and industrial-process water systems.

ERIDANIA BEGHIN-SAY HALTS AMERICAN MAIZE BID

Eridania Beghin-Say S.A. said yesterday that it was terminating its tender offer of $40 a share for the shares of the American Maize- Products Company of Stamford, Conn., because the minimum conditions for the offer were not met. The company, based in Paris, said the Maine Supreme Court had blocked the issuance of additional American Maize class B shares, a condition of the Eridania Beghin-Say offer.

WARCO TO BEGIN HOSTILE BID SOON FOR TURNER BUILDERS

The Warco Acquisitions Corporation said yesterday that it would soon begin a hostile offer to acquire the common stock in the Turner Corporation, the big international construction company, directly from shareholders. In response, Turner said it had "severe doubts" about Warco's credibility. Warco, an investment firm based in Huntington, L.I., which owns about 5 percent of Turner's shares, said it had made several overtures to Turner about a potential acquisition and was rebuffed. Turner, based in New York, said that two of Warco's principals, Richard LaCroix and Richard Reiben, approached Turner last December but failed to show up at a meeting with Turner's advisers. Turner's stock closed up $1.25, at $11.875, on the American Stock exchange.

Mercedes-Benz A.G., the luxury car unit of Daimler-Benz A.G., said yesterday that it would offer its new E-Class models at prices 4.2 percent to 6.7 percent lower than comparably equipped predecessor models. The new E-Class models due in June will have prices ranging from 51,980 marks ($36,097) for the E-220 Diesel to 99,418 marks for the E-420, the company said.

Four founding shareholders in the 3i Group, Europe's biggest venture capital company, will sell up to 20 percent of 3i's shares in June. The Bank of England, Lloyds Bank P.L.C., Barclays P.L.C. and the Midland Bank P.L.C., the holders that are selling shares, currently own about 32 percent of 3i. They first reduced their holdings when 3i became a publicly traded company.

Tele-Communications Posts Loss Of 8 Cents a Share in 1st Quarter

Tele-Communications Inc., the nation's largest cable company, reported a net loss tonight of $45 million, or 8 cents a share, for the first quarter of 1995, in contrast to earnings of $32 million, or 7 cents a share, a year earlier. After dividend payments to preferred shareholders, the 1995 loss is $53 million. Analysts had expected the company to earn one cent a share, according to the mean estimate of eight analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research.

Wheat Prices Surge as Planting Is Expected to Face Rain Delay

Wheat prices continued to surge yesterday, reaching their highest levels in three months as rains forecast for the Midwest threatened to delay spring planting until late in the season. On other commodity markets, crude oil and gasoline prices rose, helping to push the Commodity Research Bureau index up 0.21 point, to 230.45.
