AMERICAN PUBLISHING TO BUY 12 THOMSON DAILY PAPERS

The American Publishing Company said yesterday that it had agreed to buy 12 smaller-circulation daily newspapers and related publications from the Thomson Corporation for undisclosed terms. The newspapers are among the 25 American newspapers Thomson put on the block this year as part of a restructuring. American Publishing, based in Chicago, is a leading publishing group whose newspapers include The Chicago Sun-Times and The Jerusalem Post in Israel. Newspapers to be sold under the agreement would include The Ada Evening News, in Oklahoma, The Big Spring Herald, in Texas, The Leavenworth Times, in Kansas, and The Palladium-Times, in Oswego, N.Y.

AT&T AND LOTUS EXPAND DEAL ON NETWORK NOTES

The AT&T Corporation and the Lotus Development unit of I.B.M. said yesterday that they had expanded an agreement to develop and market a system to link far-flung offices using AT&T hardware and Lotus software. The two companies said nine new corporate customers had signed up to use it. AT&T and Lotus will continue to co-market AT&T Network Notes through the end of the decade.

TERADYNE WINS NAVY CONTRACT FROM LOCKHEED MARTIN

Teradyne Inc. said yesterday that it had been awarded a $43 million contract from the Information Systems unit of the Lockheed Martin Corporation to supply digital-test subsystems for the Navy's test equipment for fleet and depot maintenance of its avionics weapons systems. Teradyne's stock closed up 87.5 cents a share yesterday, at $76.125, on the New York Stock Exchange.

MOORE FINDS FINANCING TO MAKE HOSTILE TAKEOVER BID

The Moore Corporation said yesterday that the Bank of Nova Scotia had agreed to provide up to $1.1 billion for its hostile takeover bid of Wallace Computer Services Inc. With the financing, Moore said it should be able to finance its tender offer of $56 a share in cash. The Bank of Nova Scotia would serve as lead agent and would syndicate the financing to a group of American, Canadian and overseas banks. The Moore Corporation, based in Toronto, produces forms and form-related services.

ALLIANCE GAMING SEEKS DATA FOR BID TO TAKE OVER BALLY

The Alliance Gaming Corporation has asked Bally Gaming International Inc. to provide information that would help Alliance decide whether to pursue a tender offer for Bally shares. In a letter to Bally on Aug. 2, Steven Greathouse, Alliance's chairman, president and chief executive, said that "allowing us access to these materials would enable us to firm up our financing and eliminate any remaining uncertainty about our offer." The letter to the Bally chairman and chief executive, Richard Gillman, was included Friday in a filing by Alliance, which had begun a hostile tender offer to acquire 4.4 million shares of Bally, based in Las Vegas, Nev. Alliance has offered $12.50 a share, or $55 million, for the controlling stake it seeks. Bally shares were 12.5 cents yesterday, at $11.25, in Nasdaq trading.

The Netscape Communications Corporation has raised the size of its initial stock sale to the public to five million shares and the stock's indicated price to as high as $24. The company is scheduled to sell shares on Wednesday to raise about $120 million. It originally planned to sell 3.5 million shares at $13, but the new indicated price is $21 to $24 a share.

Adobe Merger Is Cleared

Adobe Systems Inc. said its proposed acquisition of the Frame Technology Corporation has cleared an antitrust review. The waiting period for the acquisition under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Act expired Friday night without a challenge by the Justice Department or the Federal Trade Commission, Adobe said. Adobe had agreed in June to buy Frame Technology for about $490 million in stock. The merger still requires approval by shareholders of the two software companies.

Chrysler Reported Set on Indiana Plant

The Chrysler Corporation is expected to disclose plans on Thursday to build a $1 billion truck transmission plant in Kokomo, Ind., a move that will save at least 2,000 jobs in the area and likely generate many more. The announcement, to be made by Robert J. Eaton, chairman of Chrysler, and Gov. Evan Bayh of Indiana, comes four months after 5,500 workers at the company's existing Kokomo plant walked out for one day to protest the decision to find a site outside of the region to build transmissions for Jeep Grand Cherokees and Dodge Rams, among other light trucks.
