Staff Is Cut at Berkshire Paper

The new owners of the venerable Berkshire Eagle in Pittsfield, Mass., have moved to cut salaries and staff, slashing the newsroom work force by more than 25 percent. Saturday editions of the newspaper reported that 11 of the 40 editorial employees were either not offered jobs or decided to resign when an affiliate of the Media News Group of Denver took control last week of the Eagle Publishing Group, the newspaper's parent company.

Fisons P.L.C. today rejected for a second time a $2.6 billion takeover offer from Rhone-Poulenc Rorer Inc., saying that Rhone failed to appreciate its "unrecognized value." Rhone-Poulenc Rorer responded by saying that it had no plans to raise its offer of $:2.40, or $3.67, a share for Fisons, which is Britain's fourth-largest drug maker. Rhone-Poulenc Rorer first made the offer on Aug. 18.

Hayes Creditors Reach Accord

The creditors of Hayes Microcomputer Products Inc. have approved a plan giving the company more time to file a reorganization plan, the company saidn last week. Hayes said that the agreement extended the date by which it could file a plan to Oct. 16 from Oct. 2. Additionally, the accord sets Oct. 2 as the goal for the company to obtain $15 million in financing and Oct. 16 for other financing.

Amylin Pharmaceuticals Inc. has filed a registration statement with the Securities and Exchange Commission to sell 2.5 million shares to the public and about 1.27 million shares to Johnson & Johnson. Amylin, a biotechnology company based here, said on Friday that the proceeds from the sales would be used to finance the last of three human tests of the company's diabetes product, pramlintide.
