BRAZILIAN PROJECT TO CAUSE DROP IN HALLIBURTON'S PROFIT

The Halliburton Company said yesterday that profit in the current quarter would fall sharply because of widening losses from an oil project off the coast of Brazil. Cost overruns and delays at the Barracuda-Caratinga project for Petroleo Brasileiro, Brazil's national oil company, led to losses of $104 million, which would cut second-quarter profit to 2 cents a share, excluding some one-time items, Halliburton said. Analysts surveyed by Thomson First Call previously expected the company to earn 25 cents a share. Stock in Halliburton, which is based in Houston, fell $1.27, or 5.2 percent, to $23.16 a share on the New York Stock Exchange.
